Lohr Family Wins State Environmental Award

Valley Pike Farm, Inc., owned and operated by Gary and Ellen Lohr and Matt and Andrea Lohr, from Broadway has won the 2004 Pilgrim's Pride Environmental Award. The family operation was selected from over 300 Virginia poultry farmers.

Each year Pilgrim's pride Poultry Corporation recognizes environmental excellence among its producers. Criteria is given in the areas of farm physical appearance, nutrient runoff control, mortality disposal, community involvement, and overall voluntary environmental efforts. The Virginia designated “Century Farm” received a $500 award as well as a farm sign recognizing its accomplishment.

The Lohr's have been in the poultry business for over 30 years and have been active leaders in the agricultural industry. They routinely host congressional visits as well as offer field trips to over 2,000 students annually. Last year the farm was selected by the National Chicken Council for a consumer awareness photo shoot.

Educating consumers about agriculture has become their passion and it shows through their on and off farm activities. In addition to raising poultry, the Lohr family produces beef cattle, wheat, hay, sweet corn, produce and U-Pick pumpkins. Matt has served several years as president of the Rockingham County Farm Bureau and Andrea currently serves on the Virginia State Board of Agriculture.
