Young Farmers Honor Rockingham County Producers

For their outstanding contributions to the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation’s Young Farmer Program, the VFBF Young Farmer Committee presented Del. Matt Lohr, R-Broadway, and his wife, Andrea, with the 2009 VFBF Warren Beach Award.

The Lohrs were recognized Dec. 1 for their tireless work to promote the program and the value of future agricultural leaders.

“We are always impressed with the Lohrs’ support and promotion of our program throughout the state,” said committee chairman Jay Yankey. “This family has made a commitment to serve Farm Bureau and to help the organization grow and its new producer members to succeed.”

The Lohrs received the award during the 2009 VFBF Annual Convention in Richmond. It is named for a veteran Farm Bureau leader whose support of young farmers is legendary.

Matt Lohr is a lifelong resident of Rockingham County and grew up on a Virginia Century Farm. He served as the state FFA president in 1990 and national FFA vice president in 1991. After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1995 with a degree in agricultural education, he and his wife joined his family’s farming operation. Lohr has served two terms as president of the Rockingham County Farm Bureau.

He is currently serving his second term in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Originally from southwestern Kentucky, Andrea Lohr is a 1996 graduate of the University of Kentucky and served as a state FFA president. She went on to work with the National FFA Made For Excellence staff, the Washington Leadership Conference staff, the Blast Off training staff and the Life Knowledge program and as a coach for national FFA officers. She taught middle school for four years and holds a master’s degree in counseling from James Madison University. She currently serves on the Virginia Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

In addition to farming, the Lohrs operate a motivational speaking business called New Directions Communications. In 2003 they received the inaugural American Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmer and Rancher Excellence in Agriculture Award. They have two children.

With nearly 150,000 members in 88 county Farm Bureaus, VFBF is Virginia’s largest farmers’ advocacy group. Farm Bureau is a non-governmental, nonpartisan, voluntary organization committed to protecting Virginia’s farms and ensuring a safe, fresh and locally grown food supply.
